Although separated by generations and working in different media, Terry Stringer and Lois White share a profound commitment to the expressive power of the human figure as a vehicle for exploring universal human experiences. White’s modernist-symbolist paintings and Stringer’s figurative bronze sculptures move beyond literal representation, using gesture, form, symbolism and monumentality to explore spirituality, morality, resilience, hope and the complexity of the human condition. Presented together, their work reveals a dialogue across generations, demonstrating a shared humanism and showing how two significant New Zealand artists expanded the expressive possibilities of figurative art.

Access information: The New Zealand Portrait Gallery is an accessible venue, all on one level. There is an accessible wharepaku (toilet) at the back of the venue.
