Philip Trusttum’s paintings celebrate the world with an exuberance that is unmistakably his own. Over a career spanning more than six decades, he developed a powerful figurative expressionist style that made him one of the country’s most recognisable and celebrated artists. His family, domestic life and his environment provided an endless supply of subjects, but Trusttum was never interested in simply recording what he saw. He transformed the familiar through saturated colour, vigorous brushwork, unexpected viewpoints and a restless play between recognition and abstraction.
