Admission

Entry to the Gallery is free. We welcome a koha (donation).

The Gallery is open everyday from 10am to 4.30pm. We are closed Christmas Day and Good Friday.

Shed 11 is located on Wellington Waterfront, just off Customhouse Quay, opposite Johnston St.

Travel

Car or taxi

There is limited on-street parking at meters on Customhouse Quay, and a Wilson Parking facility under the TSB Arena, accessible off Jervois Quay. There are mobility parking spaces opposite the rear of the Gallery next to TSB Arena. Please contact the Gallery ahead if you require a parking pass for accessibility. 

Public transport

Find the best way to get to us by bus or train by planning your journey via the Metlink website.

The New Zealand Portrait Gallery Te Pūkenga Whakaata approximately 550meters from the Wellington Railway Station.

The closest bus stops are:

Getting around the Gallery

There is step-free access throughout our building and the Gallery is all on one level. You can also view our floorplan. The Gallery entrance has sliding glass doors followed by push/pull glass doors.

Resources and support at the Gallery

Visiting with young children

We have a whānau (family) space at the back of the Gallery with seating and a space to do a creative activity. We have a baby change station in an accessible bathroom. The venue is buggy accessible. 

Wheelchairs

We have a wheelchair on-site available for use while you are in the gallery, please ask at reception.

Assistance dogs

Assistance dogs are welcome at the Gallery. Please ensure your dog is wearing its harness within the Gallery. 

Large print resources

Our labels are in large print throughout our exhibitions. You can collect a large print physical copy of the exhibition text from the front desk upon your arrival.

Lighting

Some exhibitions require lower lighting levels for the protection of the artworks this will be noted on the exhibition page.

Sound

Some exhibitions include looping sound this will be noted on the exhibition page.

Facilities at the Gallery

Clockroom

Small bags may be taken into the gallery. There are unsupervised coat hooks by the front entrance. As we do not have a checked luggage facility, please leave backpacks and large bags at home.

Wharepaku (toilets)

There is an accessible gender neutral toilet, with baby-changing facilities available at the back of the Gallery.

The closest Changing Places Toilet is at Te Aro Precinct, Inglewood Place. Visit the Changing Places website to find out more about these facilities.

Seating

There is armless low seating throughout the Gallery. Portable armless folding chairs are also available: please ask a member of staff or volunteer.

Places to eat and drink

Food and drink are not allowed into the Gallery - you can leave these at the front desk. We do not have a cafe or restaurant on site but there are numerous excellent cafes and restaurants nearby.
