In response to the New Zealand Portrait Gallery exhibition A Horse Walks Into A Bar curated by Matthew Whiteman, zinester Bryce Galloway will be running a zine-making workshop for adults.

1.00–3.30 pm

Materials provided. Open to ages 15 and over.

Consider the humour of unlikely juxtaposition that’s often part of collage. Mix words and images to come up with new hybrid poems and pictures. These will be compiled as collaborative group zine for participants to take home.

What is a zine?

A zine (pronounced “zeen”) is a noncommercial often homemade or online publication usually devoted to specialized and often unconventional subject matter.

Bryce Galloway is a zinester, artist and academic. His own zine Incredibly Hot Sex with Hideous People is Aotearoa’s longest running zine and is usually comprised of diaristic writing and doodly [sic] drawing. Bryce is the founding committee member of Kirikiriroa Hamilton Zinefest and also part of the Wellington Zinefest committee. He’s the author of the first history of zines in Aotearoa - Zines NZ (punk to present) due out in May of this year. Access information: The New Zealand Portrait Gallery is an accessible venue, all on one level. There is an accessible wharepaku (toilet) at the back of the venue. The gallery has automatic sliding doors and glass doors that can be pushed or pulled to enter. We have a wheelchair available for use within the gallery, and there is low stool seating throughout.
