National Portrait Competition 2000

The National Portrait Competition was the inaugural biennial competition for portraiture run by the New Zealand Portrait Gallery. It would be renamed the Adam Portraiture Award in 2002.

The exhibition was held at the New Zealand Portrait Gallery’s former location in Bowen House, Wellington between 10 March and 1 April 2000.

The competition judge was Dr. Charles Saumarez Smith, Director of the National Portrait Gallery, London.

The winner was Marianne Muggeridge for a portrait of her daughter titled ‘Lucy in her Green Dress’. This work is now in our permanent collection.

Prizes were also awarded in three other categories - Sculpture (won by Terry Stringer), Multimedia (Sean Kerr) and Photography (Janice Abo Cianis)
