Raymond McIntyre | A talk presented by Linda Tyler

  • New Zealand Portrait Gallery Te Pūkenga Whakaata Shed 11, 60 Lady Elizabeth Lane Wellington New Zealand (map)

Initially known for his landscapes and street scenes, Raymond McIntyre's reputation is now noted for the elegant stylised portraits he produced after moving to Britain in 1909, at the age of 30. Colin McCahon was among the first to recognise his unique talent and achievements when he included 12 of McIntyre's paintings in an exhibition of six New Zealand expatriate artists in 1962. Today McIntyre's portraits are highly valued by connoisseurs and are rarely sold at auction, and then for very high prices.

Linda Tyler has written about McIntyre for the Dictionary of New Zealand Biography and Te Ara, the online Encyclopedia of New Zealand. She is currently Convenor of Museums and Cultural Heritage at the University of Auckland.
