Michael Bell (Mush)

Mush, a contractor at Jerusalem, comes from of a family of some local standing – in 1969 it was his family that provided the house in which James K. Baxter, one of New Zealand’s best known poets and a critic and religious writer, established his spiritual community at the remote Whanganui River settlement of Jerusalem. Mush himself ‘went roving for a while’, but in what he recalls as ‘the turning point’ in his life, his mother called him back to ‘uphold the mana of our family’ and instructed him ‘in right ways’.
