Richard J Kelly & Julie Francis

Richard Kelly, a colonial ‘roughrider’, went to the Boer War (1899–1902) probably as part of the Southland/Otago contingent of the Otago Mounted Rifles, soldiers renowned for their gallantry and fighting skills. His wife, Julie Francis, was the daughter of a Southland sheep station owner. This portrait, with its formal poses and the bouquet (behind which Kelly is hiding a wound he got while fighting) is clearly a marriage portrait.
