Ways To Support Us

Support for the Gallery can be through gifts, bequests and donations and by becoming a Friend.

Such support allows the Gallery to continue to develop a representative collection of portraits of people who have contributed to the development of our nation, or who represent our culture in some interesting or important respect, created by artists of distinction; to hold challenging and informative exhibitions; to extend our outreach programmes; and to further the development of portrait art.

Individual Gifts

A gift of a portrait to the New Zealand Portrait Gallery helps to build and develop the collection. Donors who wish to give a portrait should approach the Director for further information

The Portrait Gallery is heavily dependent on annual donations and grants to deliver its programmes. Individual cash donations are essential to our activities and always welcome.

The New Zealand Portrait Gallery is registered with the Charities Commission and has tax exempt status with the Inland Revenue Department. This means that cash donations above $5 attract a 33.33% tax credit up to the level of taxable income.

Donors who make an annual donation or a longer term commitment of $250 or more make a significant difference to our work and are recognised in our Annual Report. Donors of:

  • $5000 or greater join the Masters' Circle
  • $2000 - $4,999 join the Artists' Circle
  • $250 - $1,999 join the Canvas Circle

Circle donors are invited to commit their support for up to five years in order to help the Gallery plan for the future. Annual donors receive invitations to all exhibition previews and other Gallery functions.

Corporate Support

The corporate community plays a vital role in assisting the expansion of the Gallery’s programmes, the range of our exhibitions, and the development of our collection. The New Zealand Portrait Gallery actively encourages cooperation between the business sector and the arts. It endeavours to develop continuing partnerships with our corporate supporters that are specific to their needs, including the use of Gallery space for corporate functions.

Sponsorship Opportunities

A number of sponsorship opportunities exist. We welcome the sponsorship of:

  • exhibitions
  • our Portrait Laureate and internship programmes
  • the commissioning of portraits
  • the work of the Gallery as a whole.

The Endowment Fund

The Trustees of the Gallery established an Endowment Fund in 2012. The Fund is to grow into a capital sum sufficient to ensure the future security as well as growth of the New Zealand Portrait Gallery. Donations to this Fund are particularly welcome.

One good way to contribute to the Endowment Fund is with a bequest.

If you would like to leave a legacy, we would be happy to discuss this and ensure that we properly understand your wishes.

What should your Will say?

You can support the New Zealand Portrait Gallery by leaving a specified sum of money or by allocating a percentage of the residue of your estate – that is, what is left over after all other legacies (including any to family and friends) have been paid.

Your will or codicil (an addition to an existing will) could use the following wording:

‘I give free of all duties to the New Zealand Portrait Gallery Trust, Shed 11, Wellington Waterfront, Wellington 6011 (Charity no. CC21606) [the sum of $_____/_____% of the net residue of my estate] for investment in perpetuity in the Trust’s Endowment Fund, and I declare that the receipt of a responsible officer of the Trust shall be sufficient discharge to my Trustees.’

Gifts in Memory

We also welcome memorial gifts to celebrate the memory of a special family member or friend.
