A short history of women-only exhibitions in Aotearoa New Zealand

  • New Zealand Portrait Gallery Te Pūkenga Whakaata Shed 11, 60 Lady Elizabeth Lane Wellington New Zealand (map)

Foregrounding both self-determination and experimentation, women* artists have often explored alternative ways of working, in order to shift patriarchal, Eurocentric paradigms of art-making and exhibiting. In this talk, Dr Kirsty Baker traces a genealogy of women-only exhibitions in Aotearoa over the past 5 decades, engaging with the work of many of the artists included in Autonomous Bodies. Through a consideration of these exhibitions, Baker will outline some of the ways that women artists have challenged the limitations placed upon their practice by the gendered and cultural biases of the nation's dominant arts discourse.

* Inclusive of all who identify with the term 'woman', in the past, present or future.
